5 Ways to listen to the Wisdom of the Body

There’s a wisdom in our body

A wisdom so powerful that it can heal wounds, digest food and grow a baby all at the same time.

Left to it’s own devices our body wisdom knows exactly what to do. It knows what we need to eat, when we need to rest and when we need to move. Yet, we have become so disconnected from this wisdom and so out of balance in body and mind that we can no longer discern what is good or right for us any more.

The mind is so full

So overloaded

So distracted

So burdened that we are no longer able to hear the wisdom of the body. Not until it literally shouts at us and pain causes us to stop.

We have ignored the cries of our body, suppressed her feelings, distracted our way out of her discomfort and ignored both what makes her feel good and what makes her feel bad.

We have become so disconnected from our body and numb to the pain, both personally and collectively, that feeling bad has become the normal. And when we do feel good, it feels so different and odd that it may even bring on anxiety because the body is so uneasy.

If we can pull ourself away from constant noise and distraction, we can begin to befriend our body again. If we are quiet enough for long enough we can begin to listen to her needs, her desires and longings.

So how can we learn to trust our body again? Especially if we have been through trauma and pain.

How can we relax into feeling good?  When we are so used to feeling tense and stressed.

The answer is to go slow, with compassion and tenderness. The body needs to know she is safe.

Have patience as you relearn the language of your body, the language of your soul.

Here are a 5 simple ways you can begin to reawaken your connection to the wisdom of the body:

  1. Take sacred time every day to sit quietly and breathe. As you breathe feel the breath in the body. Notice where the body expands and where it softens. How does deep, slow, mindful breathing make you feel?

2. Honour your body when you bathe. As you lovingly touch, massage and clean your body notice how your skin feels, how much tension you are holding in your muscles. Send love and appreciation to your body. You are learning to trust each other again.

3. Sleep naked. This allows your body to breathe. To be with out clothing. To feel the sheets against your skin. We have become so embarrassed, ashamed and guilty of our body and feeling good. This simple act of being naked can help us to get ‘comfortable’ in our own skin again.

4. Walk bare foot in nature. Your body touching the body of the earth. We are not separate, we are one. The same wisdom that creates mountains and oceans is within you. You are that magnificent.

5. Check in with your body and ask what it needs regularly. Literally ask your body a question, such as “Do you need to rest?” and feel the response in the body. You will feel drawn towards the answer and body will feel relaxed, open and at ease with the right response for you.

Implement these 5 steps into your day and watch how your life begins to change as you start listening and honouring your body.
